2010-2011
Term: Spring
Course title: Urban Change and Society in a Global World
Department: Sociology
Faculty: Social Sciences and Social Technologies
Level: Bachelor
Instructor: Roman Cybriwsky, Visiting Professor (Fulbright Fellow)
Credits: 4.5 ECTS
Note: This course will examine issues of political power, inequality, social justice and quality of life in a selection of interesting and distinctive cities around the world, and will apply lessons learned to a better understanding of the urban development process and social changes that are presently underway in Kyiv. It will take a comparative approach, looking at how cities differ because of culture, historical development, and economic production, as well as at the similarities between them that have taken shape in an increasingly globalized world. We will look specifically at how people live and work in both the richest and poorest parts of our study cities, and at topics such as the conflicts that exist regarding access to space in the city, major construction and redevelopment projects for the rich in historic districts or long-established residential neighborhoods, and the economy and geography of street vendors. Key cities to be studied may include New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, and Singapore from the developed world; Mexico City, Rio De Janeiro, Mumbai, Jakarta, and Phnom Penh from developing countries; as well as Shanghai, Buenos Aires and Johannesburg, although the precise list can be amended in accordance with the time available and student interest. The course will include selections of short readings about slices of urban life in the study cities, as well as examples from literature, film, song, and other arts that represent the voices of ordinary people and the poor. The lectures will be amply illustrated with slides from the professor's own travels and research

The lectures will be amply illustrated with slides from the professor's own travels and research.
